July 16 adCenter feature review: Get negative! It could have a positive impact on your campaigns.
As part of the adCenter upgrade on Saturday, we added the ability to work with negative keywords at the campaign level so they apply to all the ad groups in the campaign. Previously, this was only possible at the ad group level. Negative keywords are specific words or phrases that help prevent your ads from being displayed to customers who are unlikely to click them. For example, if your ad sells televisions and you have specified "TV" as a keyword, but you don’t want search queries to produce results on entertainment-type searches, you could specify "listings," “soap,” and "show" as negative keywords. There are several ways to work with negative keywords at the campaign level, depending on how many campaigns you want to change. To add negative keywords at the campaign level for a new campaign:
You can also change the list of negative keywords for an existing campaign: 1. Click the Campaigns tab. 2. In the Campaign column, select the campaign you want to change settings for. 3. At the top of the page, next to Budget spent this month, click Edit. 4. On the Change campaign settings page, in the Add negative keywords text box, type new negative keywords (separated by commas). 5. Click Save. To change the list of negative keywords for multiple campaigns all at once: 1. Click the Campaigns tab. 2. To change the settings for specific campaigns, select the check boxes next to those campaigns. 3. Click Bulk edit. 4. In the Campaign setting list, select Negative keywords. 5. In the New value box, type new negative keywords (separated by commas). 6. Click Apply. Adding negative keywords in bulk replaces existing negative keywords in the selected campaigns (or in all campaigns in the list if none are selected).
